Dear Jack Hulls
Official Information Act request for information relating to the current earthquake
rating of the TSB building
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) request received on 25 May 2022.
You requested:
“Can you please provide information about the earthquake assessment of the TSB
building on Lambton quay.
Of interest is when was it last assessed and what was the result.
Any information about when another assessment wil be done.”
In June 2020, Parliamentary Services, which holds the master lease for the TSB building on
Lambton Quay obtained engineering advice from a structural engineering consultancy firm
which seismically assessed the TSB building at 80% New Building Standard (NBS).
After receiving this advice, Parliamentary Services then instructed another firm to undertake
a peer review of the initial seismic assessment. After consultation between the two
engineering firms, it was agreed that an 80% NSB rating was justified.
A further Detailed Seismic Assessment is not currently scheduled. Unless new investigation
methods are discovered, or there have been changes to existing building regulations, a
regular testing scheme would not normally be in place.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review my decision under
section 28(3) of the Act.
