Official Information Act request: Year One Review of the Algorithm Charter
Thank you for your request dated 30 May 2022, requesting the following information under the
Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act):
I would like to make a request for information relating to the StatsNZ Algorithm Charter.
At the time of the Charter’s publication in July 2020 it was stated that a “scope review”
was scheduled to be conducted 12 months later:
“The Charter for Aotearoa New Zealand is an evolving piece of work that needs to
respond to emerging technologies and also be fit-for-purpose for government agencies.
After twelve months a review of the Algorithm Charter wil be conducted, to ensure it is
achieving its intended purpose of improving government transparency and
accountability without stifling innovation or causing undue compliance burden.”

The review of the Algorithm Charter for Aotearoa New Zealand will be published on the
www.data.govt.nz website in the near future. As such, we are refusing your request under
section 18(d) of the Act on the basis that the information wil soon be publicly available. Stats
NZ will provide a link to the published report once it is publicly available, the link wil be sent to
this email address.
If you are not satisfied with this response, you have the right to seek an investigation and
review by the Ombudsman. Information about how to make a complaint is available at

It is our policy to proactively release our responses to official information requests where
