Dear Will
Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 12 July 2022.
My response to each of your questions can be found below.
Do NZ police officers have to identify themselves when asked by a member of the
public? If so does it include both name and QID number?
All New Zealand police officers are issued with identity cards as evidence of their identity
and authority. These cards include the officer’s name and QID number. You can find
more information in the ‘Police identity cards’ Police Instructions chapter, which is publicly
available here:
https://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/publication/police-identity-cards-
police-manual-chapter
If a member of the public is approached or questioned by a police officer they may ask to
see the officer’s identity card to confirm their identity.
Does NZ police acknowledge common law?
New Zealand Police (Police) does not provide legal advice, or legal interpretation services
to the public, therefore your request is refused under section 18(g) of the OIA, as the
information requested is not held by Police.
I refer you to the Policing Act 2008 which is available to view via the following link:
https://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2008/0072/latest/whole.html
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision if you are not satisfied
with the response to your request. Information about how to make a complaint is available
a
t: www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
Yours sincerely
