Request for information
Thank you for your Of icial Information Act 1982 (OIA) request dated 8 August 2022, in
which you asked for the following information:
How are operations or investigations named eg "operation deans" and is there
a police policy about this that can be released?
Police assigns operation names to a variety of tasks ranging from community service
and logistical work such as parades through to more serious events such as missing
persons and homicide investigations.
Operation names are generated by an “Operation Name Manager” application
that facilitates selection of operation names from a pre-approved pool of names.
Its use is mandatory for the selection of names for all operations where:
• the operation is inter-district, regional or national; or
• the activity or investigation is likely to end up in the public domain (for example
a District or High Court trial); or
• the operation is of a nature that wil attract public and media interest and
scrutiny; or
• the operation requires a project code (i.e. for allocation of funding and
resources).
I trust this information is of assistance to you.
Yours sincerely
