Official Information Act 1982 Request – OIA 2223-0160
Thank you for your request for information relating to The NZ Jewish Community Security
Group Charitable Trust (Trust), which was received by the Department of Internal Affairs
(Department) on the 23 August 2022.
You have requested the following:
•
The officers be disclosed, as well as the spurious claims they made to have their
names restricted
The information you have requested is currently restricted from the public Charities Register
pursuant to section 25(2) of the Charities Act 2005 because Charities Services considers it is
in the public interest that the information or document should be restricted from public
view.
I note that there is a general public interest in favour of including information on the
register, as transparency and accountability contributes to public trust and confidence in the
charitable sector. Our starting point is therefore that publishing information about charities
on the register is in the public interest, with few exceptions.
We note the Trust requested the information be restricted due to the sensitive nature of its
work and to protect the safety of those involved. We considered, on balance, that the public
interest in ensuring the Trust can carry out its work effectively and safely, outweighed the
public interest in transparency and accountability and we restricted the information.
As such, the information you requested has been withheld under section 6(d) of the Official
Information Act 1982. This is because the release of the information would be likely to
endanger the safety of any person.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review of my decisions about your request by
the Ombudsman pursuant to section 28(1) of the Act. The Office of the Ombudsman can be
contacted by writing to PO Box 10-152, Wellington or by email to
[email address].
