Tēnā koe John
On 26 August 2022 you wrote to the Minister of Education requesting the following
information:
I noted on the website, https://www.nhs.school.nz/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/NHS-BOT-
Mins-June-2022.pdf
The new Board will take office 18 Sep-22.
An election process will occur for the Staff Representative position and an impartial
Returning Officer will be appointed by the Board for this purpose.
All other Board Member positions are appointed by the MOE. Current Board Members are
reminded they must reapply should they wish to be considered for nomination.
1.
Can you please let me know where did you call for public expression of interest for
board positions and how many applications you have received? Within the
application you have received, how many are new applications from public and
how many are current member reapply?
2.
As per the minutes, the new Board will take office 18 Sep-22. I presume the
process is about to finish, how many you have shortlisted and interviewed?
3.
Also, may I request the current pay rate for board member and position
description.
The request was transferred to us in accordance with section 14 of the Official Information
Act 1982 (the Act), as the information you have requested is more closely connected with
the functions of the Ministry of Education.
Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).

17 applications were received for the five vacancies on the Northern Health School Board.
Of these, 14 were new applicants, and three were incumbent Board members. One of the
incumbents withdrew their application before the process was finalised.
Part Two – Shortlist and Interviews
Five candidates for the five vacancies for the Northern Health School Board have been
recommended to the Associate Minister of Education (School Operations) for appointment. A
selection panel considered the written applications and selected the candidates for
recommendation to the Minister. Interviews were not conducted.
Part Three – Pay rate and position description
The Ministry of Education does not hold pay rate information because each individual board
determines the honorarium paid to its members. In accordance with section 14 of the Act,
this part of the request has been transferred to the school to respond to you directly.
There is no position description for board members. However, section 125 of the Education
and Training Act 2020 sets out the role of a school board. I am refusing this part of your
request under section 18(e) as that the document alleged to contain the information
requested does not exist.
For your information, attached to our response as
Appendix A are the documents that were
available to applicants as part of the application process.
Please note, the Ministry now proactively publishes official information responses on our
website. As such, we may publish this response on our website after five working days. Your
name and contact details will be removed.
