OIA request 22/23 0241 Request for information on dual citizenship
Thank you for your Official Information Act (Act) request received by the Department of Internal
Affairs (Department), by way of partial transfer, from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and
Employment on 20 September 2022.
You requested –
1. Please provide me with the total number of New Zealand Citizens that currently hold Dual
Citizenship with Chile.
2. Please provide me with the total number of New Zealand Citizens that currently hold Dual
Citizenship with Argentina.
3. Please provide me with the total number of New Zealand Citizens that currently hold Dual
Citizenship with Falkland Islands or Malvinas.
4. Please provide me with the total number of New Zealand Citizens that currently hold Dual
Citizenship with Brazil.
In response to your request, I can provide you with the following information.
The Department does not hold information on whether New Zealand citizens hold dual
citizenship. Holding citizenship of another country, in addition to New Zealand’s, does not affect
a person’s entitlement to New Zealand citizenship, as such this information is not collected.
Your request is therefore refused in full pursuant to section 18(e) of the Act; that the document
alleged to contain the information requested does not exist or, despite reasonable efforts to
locate it, cannot be found.
Should you be interested, there is data released by the Department showing the country of
birth for people who have been granted New Zealand citizenship. If this information would be of
use to you, you can locate it by going to
www.data.govt.nz.
Click on ‘Get datasets’ (at the top left) then under ‘Organisations’ (left side of the webpage) click
on ‘Show More Organisations’ and then on ‘Department of Internal Affairs’. In the search bar at
the top of this webpage, enter ‘Country of birth for people granted New Zealand Citizenship’
and then press ‘Enter’.
As this information may be of interest to other members of the public, the Department has
decided to proactively release a copy of this response on the DIA website. All requestor data,
including your name and contact details, will be removed prior to release. The released
response will be made available here:
https://www.dia.govt.nz/Official-Information-Act-
Requests-2.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or
freephone 0800 802 602.
Ngā mihi
