Dear SA Murugayah
I refer to your information request dated 5 October 2022 made under the Official Information Act
1982. You have requested information in relation to postgraduate study in the Department of
Biochemistry at the University of Otago.
We note we emailed you 7 October 2022 to clarify whether you were interested in receiving
information in relation to enrolments to the Diploma for Graduates and enrolments to Bachelor of
Science (Honours). Your responses of 7 October 2022 and 10 October 2022 confirmed that you
wished for enrolments to both of these programmes to be included with your request.
Please see below our responses to each of your questions.
1. The number of international students who enrolled for any form of postgraduate study
with the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Otago from 2015 to the most
recent data available
2. The number of domestic students who enrolled for any form of postgraduate study with
the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Otago from 2015 to the most recent
data available
Please see the below table which shows the number of new postgraduate enrolments in a
Biochemistry programme from 2015 – 2022, broken down by Domestic and International students.
Please note that students are counted in their first year of postgraduate study only. For example, a
student enrolling in a two-year Biochemistry Masters’ degree (MSc) in 2017 would only be counted
in 2017, and not counted in 2018.

I note that in addition to the students who enrolled in postgraduate programmes with the
Department of Biochemistry, there will have also been students enrolled in postgraduate
programmes and papers in other subject areas who were supervised or co-supervised by staff in the
Department of Biochemistry.
I trust that this information will be helpful. Further information on the Postgraduate study options
offered by the Department of Biochemistry can be found on the University of Otago
website. Yours sincerely
