Access Commission
Herenga ā Nuku Aotearoa Outdoor Access Commission; legally the New Zealand
Walking Access Commission, (the Commission) is the Crown agent responsible for
providing leadership on access to the outdoors and administering a national strategy
on outdoor access, including tracks and trails. It also undertakes mapping of outdoor
access, provides information on outdoor access to the public, oversees a code of
responsible conduct in the outdoors, helps to resolve access disputes and negotiates
new outdoor access. More information on the Commission can be found at:

The Commission’s Board sets the strategic direction and priorities, sets board
policies and management performance expectations, identifies and manages risk,
monitors and evaluates organisational achievements in order to exercise its
accountability to the organisation and its stakeholders.
Board skills and competencies sought:
On behalf of Associate Minister of Agriculture, the Ministry for Primary Industries
(MPI) is seeking applications for two Board member positions. We seek candidates
with outstanding strategic and interpersonal skills. In this year’s Board appointment
process, we are looking for candidates who demonstrate the skills and experience in
relation to (some or all of the following):
promoting and building connections to facilitate access to rural land and
landowners, and into outdoor recreation and landholder communities;
track and trail expertise (planning, building, maintaining and governance);
the sport, tourism, primary or public health sector;
networking and influencing in central, regional, and local political environments;
advocating for and practising tikanga Māori (Māori customary values and
practices) and successfully partnering and or engaging with whānau, hapū and
iwi; and
engaging with the public using digital best practices preferably through social
and digital media channels.
Expectations from all Commission Board members:
under the Official Information Act 1982
comply with the Crown Entities Act, Walking Access Act and other relevant
legislation;
committed to active participation in Board affairs;
regularly attends Board and important related meetings, is aware of upcoming
meetings and business items that should be on the agenda;
stays informed about Board matters, is always well prepared for meetings, and
reviews and comments on minutes and reports;
builds a collegial working relationship with, and is accountable to, other Board

members;
contributes to finding consensus with Board colleagues, but is not afraid to be
heard when they hold alternative views;
is an active participant in the Board’s annual evaluation and planning efforts;
monitors financial performance and risk management for the Commission; and
participates in opportunities to raise the Commission’s profile and identify and
seek third party revenue.
Other details
five to six Board meetings a year;
Board meetings held at a range of locations around New Zealand;
Board meetings run on average two days each;
work outside of Board meetings averages at one day per month;
travel expenses to attend Board meetings will be covered by the Commission;
three-year term of appointment; and
Board member remuneration is: $11,200 per annum. The Commission’s Board
is classified as Level 5, Group 3a in the Public Service Commission Fees
Framework.
