Dear Mr Whakatihi
Response - Official Information Request
I refer to your request for information received on 11 November 2022. Your request has been considered under the
Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA) and I provide the following information.
Taraika subdivision’s impact on Levin’s water supply
The water restrictions that are applied in Levin are imbedded in the Take Consent granted by Horizons Regional
Council and are triggered by the flow levels present in the Ōhau River.
The restrictions are not related to the town water demand in any way other than when extremely low river flow
conditions are experienced in the Ōhau River. As such, the normal maximum take for water supply is 15 000m3/d
until the Ōhau River flow decreases to under 820l/s at which time the maximum take is reduced to 13 000m3. At this
point Level 4 restrictions will be in place which have the effect of reducing the town water demand.
Council projections for the future indicate that there will be sufficient water available for the communities to use,
including in the new Tara-Ika subdivision.
Council has been proactive in this respect by introducing both a pressure management system, and a leak detection
and repair system in the existing areas which has resulted in reducing the water demand in the town. It should be
remembered that the new reticulation network in the Tara-Ika subdivision will consist of HDPE pipes which have far
lower leakage rates than the current reticulation network’s piping.
Levin will, however, continue to have water restrictions in line with the Ōhau River flows as per the Take Consent.
Further information on the Tara-Ika development is available on the Council’s webpage:

that you make contact with Horizons Regional Council.
