Tēnā koe John Luke
On 23 January 2023, you emailed the Ministry of Social Development (the
Ministry) requesting, under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), the
following information:
I note - board member of the Children and Young People's Commission
1.
May I ask how did you call for public nomination and on what
platform you have call for public nominations, e.g. govt.jobs
website.
2.
Also, how many applications you have received from the public
and how many you have received from other nominating
agencies such as TPK.
3.
Further, how many you have shortlisted.
On 21 February 2023, the Ministry emailed you to advise that more time was
required to respond to your request. The reason for this extension is that
consultations necessary to make a decision on your request are such that a
proper response to your request cannot reasonably be made within the
original time limit. A decision will be with you no later than 28 February
2023.
For the sake of clarity, I will respond to your questions in turn.
1.
May I ask how did you call for public nomination and on what
platform you have call for public nominations, e.g. govt.jobs
website.
The vacancy seeking expressions of interest for the Chair and Board Member
roles went live on 7 December 2022. These vacancies were advertised on:
MSD Jobs website
Mahi.co.nz
Seek.co.nz
Govt. Jobs online
LinkedIn
Institute of Directors
Appoint Better Boards
Nominations were also sought from:
the Minister and the Labour Caucus
all major Cabinet leaders (all party leaders received a letter
from Hon Carmel Sepuloni, Minister for Social Development
and Employment)
Te Puni Kōkiri
Ministry for Women
Ministry for Pacific Peoples
Office of Ethnic Communities
Whaikaha - Ministry for Disabled People
2.
Also, how many applications you have received from the public
and how many you have received from other nominating
agencies such as TPK.
The Ministry received a total of 235 applications from the public. There was
one candidate nominated by the National Party, who applied for the role
through the Ministry’s website. As for the rest of the 234 applications
received, the Ministry is not able to determine if any other candidates were
nominated by an agency as the candidates have not indicated this on their
applications.
3.
Further, how many you have shortlisted.
The appointments to the Children and Young People’s Commission are
Ministerial appointments. The final shortlisting decisions have yet to be
made.
The principles and purposes of the Official Information Act 1982 under which
you made your request are:
to create greater openness and transparency about the
plans, work and activities of the Government,
to increase the ability of the public to participate in the
making and administration of our laws and policies and
to lead to greater accountability in the conduct of public
affairs.
This Ministry fully supports those principles and purposes. The Ministry
therefore intends to make the information contained in this letter and any
attached documents available to the wider public. The Ministry will do this by

deleted, and the Ministry will not publish any information that would identify
