Official Information Act request: Justices of the Peace 
 
You have asked for the total number of Justices of the Peace as of January 1 2023 and how 
many were appointed and retired in the year 1 January 2022 to 1 January 2023.You have also 
asked if that data could be broken down by electorate and (for electorates in the Auckland region) 
of how many candidates are going through the appointment process at the moment. 
 
The Justice of the Peace registry provides only a current snapshot of presently appointed JPs 
and while I cannot give you the exact number of JPs at I January, I can advise that at the date of 
this letter there are 6768 current Justices of the Peace. 
 
In the calendar year 2022, 232 JPs were appointed. During the course of the year a review of the 
overall register was undertaken which resulted in the removal of a large number of names in the 
register. 
 
The register only holds a record of current Justices of the Peace and we do not keep a record of 
the numbers that have retired or resigned during any given year. It is possible to find lists of these 
and appointments via a search of the NZ Gazette. 
 
I can advise that there are currently 288 applications at various stages under consideration for 
appointment.
