I refer to your information request dated 20 February 2023 made under the Official Information Act
1982 (the Act). You have requested:
“confirmed grades (the specific grade percentage, not merely the grade letter) for all 100,
200 and 300 level math papers that were offered in 2022. If a paper was offered in both
semesters, could the results of each be included separately in the document.”
You have also requested:
“the results of the 100 - 300 level COMO papers from 2022 in the same format, with the rest
of the data. These papers are: COMO101, COMO204, COMO303.”
Subject to the following comments, please see attached the information you have requested. Please
note that there are four pages in the attached spreadsheet (one for each year level for the MATH
papers and one for the COMO papers).
• results for papers MATH130 and MATH140 for Semester 2 2022 have not yet been finalised.
We therefore decline your request of this information pursuant to section 18(g) of the Act
on the basis that we do not hold the information requested. This information should be
available by mid-April 2023, and we invite you to place another request at that time.
• on occasions where fewer than ten students were enrolled in a paper, we have determined
that it is necessary to withhold the marks and specific grades for papers. Therefore,
information related to papers MATH301 (Semester 1) and MATH374 (Semester 2) has been
withheld to protect students’ privacy and wellbeing. We consider that withholding this
information is necessary to protect against the identity of these students being determined
or inferred, and their personal information (i.e. their marks) could be disclosed. We
therefore withhold this information pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act.
• on occasions where fewer than five students have failed a paper (i.e. received a grade of Fail
D, Fail E), we have determined that it is necessary to withhold the marks and specific grades
for these students to protect their privacy and wellbeing. We consider that withholding this
information is necessary to protect against the identity of these students being determined
or inferred, and their personal information (i.e. their marks) could be disclosed. We
therefore withhold this information pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act.
• in the attached mark and grade distributions, we note that students who withdrew from the
papers and students who gained an Aegrotat Pass (where no mark or grade is awarded) are
excluded from the data.
I trust that this information will be helpful.
In the above cases, we consider that good reasons exist for withholding information, and this is not
outweighed by other considerations which would make it desirable, in the public interest, to make
the information available.
If you are not satisfied with our response to your information request, section 28(3) of the Act
provides you with the right to ask an Ombudsman to investigate and review this response. However,
we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.
Yours sincerely
