Dear Barney
Request made under the Official Information Act 1982
Thank you for your email
of 11 March 2023 requesting the following information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act). I will respond to each part of your request in turn:
How many street lights are there in New Zealand?
There are other streetlights owned by local councils, and you would need to contact those councils
individually for that information. I am therefore refusing this part of your request under section 18(g)(i)
of the Act as the information requested is not held by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, and there is
no reason to believe it is held by another government agency or department.
How many street lights are there on motorways in New Zealand?
The following information is outlined in the table below:
Poles
Lights
Expressway
2,532 2,618
Highway
32,579 31,924
Motorway
8,327 9,047
43,438 43,589
Please note the following concerning the data contained in the table:
• The figures are limited to Waka Kotahi assets; i.e. street lights attached to state highways.
• The figures supplied here are taken directly from RAMM, our state highway asset management
system. Waka Kotahi is currently undertaking an audit of street lighting assets and our current
best estimate suggests that the total number of assets may increase by approximately 7% when
this process is complete.
• Each light is attached to a bracket, and each bracket is attached to a pole. A pole may contain
more than one bracket and a bracket may contain more than one lamp.
2
• The figures exclude any assets where the assets itself, or the corresponding pole or bracket, is
noted as decommissioned.
Under section 28 of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision to refuse
part of this request. The contact details for the Ombudsman can be located at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
In accordance with Waka Kotahi policy, this response will be published on our website with personal
details removed.
If you would like to discuss this reply with Waka Kotahi, please contact us by email to
[NZTA request email].
Yours sincerely
