Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 14 March, in which you asked for
information about the total headcount and resignations of frontline Police.
My response to each of your questions can be found below.
1. Please provide the total number of active frontline police as of March 2023.
New Zealand Police classifies the constabulary as being in ‘Front Line’, ‘Front Line Support’, or ‘Support’
roles. The below table shows a breakdown of these roles, comparing October 2017 to March 2023.

These numbers do not include Authorised Officers or staff with temporary sworn powers (Jailers, Custody
Officers, Court Escorts etc). They also do not include casual staff, contractors, agency staff or other non-
sworn staff.
Constabulary roles are also broken down into “1st Responders” and “2nd Responders”. The below table
shows a breakdown of these roles, comparing October 2017 to March 2023.

2. Please provide the total resignations by headcount number for the year 2022(year previous was
412)
In the 2022 calendar year, there were 386 police officer resignations. This does not include Authorised
Officers or staff with temporary sworn powers. It also does not include casual staff, contractors, agency
staff or other non-sworn staff.
3. Please provide the total number of from officers who graduated from Police College between
October 2017 to December 2022.
The total number of graduates between October 2017 and December 2022 is 3,663.
4. Please provide the number of Police officers who graduated between October 2017 and December
2022 and are no longer in the Police force.
The number of those graduates who are no longer employed by New Zealand Police is 274.
