Dear Jane
Official Information Act request 23.18 Misconduct Committee Minutes
I refer to the Official Information Act (the Act) request dated 22 March 2023 for information relating to
Misconduct Committee Minutes. You have requested the fol owing:
•
Could you please provide the minutes of all meetings by the Misconduct Committee from 2020, 2021
and 2022.
This information has been refused under s 9(2)(a) to protect the privacy of natural persons. Matters that are
brought to the Misconduct Committee are done so on the basis that they are dealt with privately. It is in the
public interest that students can work through the Misconduct Committee process without the risk of being
identified. This helps to ensure the process is robust and that they can obtain any support they require. For
further information on how the process regarding the Misconduct Committee works, please see the
Misconduct Procedures - Guide for Students (availabl
e here under UC Documents and Information), the
Academic Misconduct regulation
s here and the Behavioural Misconduct regulations
here.
The University is, however, able to provide at a high level the common reasons for academic misconduct being
upheld from the cases that were referred to the Proctors. These were col aboration with other students and
poor academic practice such as incorrect referencing.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about
how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
Yours sincerely
Claire O'Connell
