Dear Tulson

I refer to your email of 12 April 2023 to the Office of the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Chris Hipkins,
requesting information under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA), as follows:

Does NZ have any Gold reserves

On 26 April 2023, the Office of the Prime Minister transferred your request to the Reserve Bank of
New Zealand – Te Pūtea Matua (RBNZ) for response, as the requsted information is more closely
connected with the functions of the RBNZ.

Response

We understand your request to be about whether gold is held as an asset by the RBNZ as part of
New Zealand’s foreign reserves.

I can advise that the RBNZ does not hold gold as part of its foreign reserves.

More information on foreign reserves can be found on the RBNZ website at
https://www.rbnz.govt.nz/financial-markets/foreign-reserves.

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this OIA response.
Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or
freephone 0800 802 602.

Please note that we intend to publish a copy of this response on the RBNZ website at
www.rbnz.govt.nz/research-and-publications/official-information-requests.  Responses to requests
are published in order to improve public transparency and provide an additional resource for anyone
seeking information.

Yours sincerely
