Information Request – New appliances or buildings in the Nelson Tasman region.
I refer to your official information request dated 15 April 2023 asking for information about any
new equipment, appliances, or buildings that Fire and Emergency New Zealand plans to introduce
in the near future in the Nelson Tasman region, including all relevant documents, reports, and
correspondence related to the request. After some correspondence, on 25 April 2023 you refined
your request to just include any plans for new appliances or stations being built or refurbished in
the Nelson Tasman region in the next year.
Appliances in the Nelson Tasman region Your request has been assessed in accordance with the Official Information Act (OIA). Regarding
appliances, we do not build appliances for specific areas like the Nelson Tasman region. Rather, we
build them for the national fleet and then they’re allocated to the area with greatest need per the
cascade plan. The ‘cascade plan’ is the document which outlines this planned allocation. However,
while new appliances are not being built, there is one piece of information relevant to your
request regarding appliances in the region:
• Per the 2022-2023 cascade plan, a 2016 Iveco EuroCargo ML160 tanker has been allocated
to the Nelson Fire Brigade and is expected to arrive shortly.
We are advised that these are all the plans for appliances in the Nelson Tasman region in the next
year.
Buildings and Refurbishments to Buildings in the Nelson Tasman Region
Regarding new buildings or the refurbishing of existing buildings, the following plans are being put
into place for the Nelson Tasman region in the next year. We note alongside each plan relevant
documents detailing them:
• We have secured/land banked a site in Motueka for a new fire station. In relation to this,
we enclose the tactical resource plan detailing this decision.
• Marahau station is receiving an upgrade on their turnout system (their siren and radio).
• Kaiteriteri station is receiving a new uniform locker and ablution facilities installed. In
relation to this, we enclose the tactical resource plan for these upgrades.
• A temporary shelter is being installed in Nelson to house and maintain three training
appliances until a more permanent plan is developed and funded. In relation to this we
enclose the proposed design for the shelter.
• Upper Moutere station is currently storing a ute outside, so we are looking to build a shed
extension to house and maintain it. In relation to this, we enclose the proposed design for
the extension of the shed.
Some personal information has been withheld to protect the privacy of natural persons under
section 9(2)(a) of the OIA. We do not consider that there is a public interest in the release of the
information which outweighs withholding it. We are advised that these are all the plans for
stations being built or refurbished in the Nelson Tasman region in the next year.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
