Request made under the Official Information Act 1982 
 
Thank you for your email of 20 April 2023 requesting the following information under the Official 
Information Act 1982 (the Act): 
 
•  How many cameras does NZTA currently use to monitor roads and public spaces? 
•  Of these cameras, how many are made by Hikvision? 
•  If this information is available, I would also appreciate any further details regarding the use and 
maintenance of these cameras and if they will be phased out. 
  
This letter is to advise that Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is extending the 20 working days 
available to respond to your request, as allowed for under section 15A of the Act. We require an 
additional 8 working and will provide a response to you on or before 31 May 2023. 
 
Waka Kotahi owns and operates a significant number of cameras across the state highway network, 
including in collaboration Councils. Therefore, your request necessitates a search through a large 
quantity of information before a proper response to your request can be provided.  
 
Under section 28 of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision to 
extend this request. The contact details for the Ombudsman can be located at 
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
