Dear Karen
Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 22 April 2023, in which you requested
information regarding study leave for New Zealand Police staff. My response to each part of your request can be
found below.
The policy is out of date and applications for fulltime study are secretly handled.
1. The number of Police officers and employees granted fulltime study leave within the past
five (5) years.
The table below shows the number of New Zealand Police staff who were granted more than 5 days study
leave for each of the last 5 years. Each of the years shown represents the 12 months ending 31 March
2023.

2. What each person applied to study.
3. How much each cost to Police.
4. How many were studying Maori/Maori related subjects.
With respect to the details of the courses undertaken by staff, Police does not record this information as it is
decided and managed locally. In addition, it is likely that some staff on leave without pay (LWOP) are
undertaking ful time study, but this is not recorded in our systems and therefore not reflected in the counts
above.
In addition, Police does not hold information at the level of detail required to determine the cost of each
course. Therefore, these parts of your request are refused pursuant to section 18(g) of the OIA, as the
information requested is not held.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision if you are not satisfied with the
response to your request. Information about how to make a complaint is available at:
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
Yours sincerely
