Are these "external checks" with agencies like Inland Revenue Department, NZ Police etc.
automated as well?
In response to your request I can provide you with the following information.
Aside from matching an application with the Immigration New Zealand record (to calculate the
presence requirement), external checks with other government agencies are not automated.
These external checks only occur after an application has been allocated to a case officer.
As this information may be of interest to other members of the public, the Department has
decided to proactively release a copy of this response on the DIA website. All requestor data,
including your name and contact details, will be removed prior to release. The released
