Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 23 May 2023, in which
you requested:
As per the interview given by the Minister of Police on NZ Q+A on 21st of May 2023
attributing a rise in gang member numbers to the number of 501 deportees, please
provide the number of people deported from Australia to NZ in March and April
2023.
In response to your request, I can advise that a total of 28 (14 in March and 14 in April)
people were deported from Australia between 1 March 2023 and 30 April 2023.
This information is not collated in a manner that separates deported criminals by the
“reasons” or section of the Australian Migration Act they were deported under (i.e. s501,
s116, s109). As a result, the total provided includes information of all deported criminals
from Australia, no matter what section of the Australian Migration Act they were removed
under.
Please note that as part of its commitment to openness and transparency, Police
proactively releases some information and documents that may be of interest to the
public. An anonymised version of this response may be publicly released on the New
Zealand Police website.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this
decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
Yours sincerely
