[FYI request #23232 email]
Dear Mat F
Thank you for your email, dated 23 June 2023 requesting the following information under the
Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):
1) How much has the kiwibuild programme cost, from it's establishment?
2) How many completed builds can be directly attributed to the kiwibuild programme?
3) What is the average house and land size, in square metres, of those houses?
4) What is the median number of bedrooms of those houses?
On 27 June 2023 Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities accepted the transfer of questions
two, three, and four of your request from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
I have consulted with the relevant staff in Kāinga Ora about your request and I can advise
you that as at 31 May 2023, 1,805 KiwiBuild homes have been completed with an average
floor area of 87 square metres.
For a breakdown of the 1,805 KiwiBuild homes by bedroom, I refer you to the table
accompanying this response. Please note that for apartments, Kāinga Ora does record land
area. I am therefore refusing this part of your request under section 18(g)(i) of the Act, as:
‘…the information requested is not held by the department or Minister of the Crown or
organisation and the person dealing with the request has no grounds for believing that
the information is either held by another department or Minister of the Crown or
organisation, or by a local authority…’
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this response.
Information about how to make a complaint is available online at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or by phone on 0800 802 602.
Please note that Kāinga Ora proactively releases our responses to official information
requests where possible. Our response to your request may be published at
https://kaingaora.govt.nz/publications/official-information-requests/ with your personal
information removed.
Yours sincerely

Notes:
•
KiwiBuild homes have an apartment typology and they generally do not have any land area associated
RELEASED UNDER THE
INFORMATION
with that home. The system used by Kāinga Ora does not hold data on the land area of common
areas.
•
Not all apartments have balconies included.
•
The four-bedroom terraced houses, which have larger Gross Floor Area (GFA) than the stand-alone
homes, are al located in the same development. They have three storeys and stairs on each level, so
the GFA for these homes is relatively larger.
•
The four-bedroom duplexes with large land area are al in the same development in New Plymouth.
They are built at the top of a hil and the site lots incorporated significant bush area below the
OFFICIAL
properties.
