Dear Jaan
OFFICIAL INFORMATION ACT REQUEST 2023/49
On 5 July 2023 you made a request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the OIA) for the
following information:
a copy of any communication between the electoral commision or any member of it and
Taieri MP Ingrid Leary Also any between Harry Tam and the electoral commision or any member
of it. Also between electoral commision or any member of it and any known mongrel mob
members. Dating between the 1st of January 2023 and the 5th of July 2023.
For the purposes of this response, we have only included correspondence between the Electoral
Commission or any member of the Electoral Commission, Taieri MP Ingrid Leary, Harry Tam and any
known Mongrel Mob members related to the Electoral Commission providing enrolment, eligibility
and voting information at meetings and huis during the requested timeframe.
Part of the Commission’s role is to raise awareness with the public on how to get ready to vote. This
includes enrolment and voting period information. The Commission also addresses any barriers to
participation through building community understanding of voting eligibility for all New Zealanders,
why voting is important, and to support confidence for voters to take part.
Therefore, we include a broad range of communities in our planning and engagement activity. It is
part of the Commission’s statutory role to work with all communities to help them understand and
take part in elections and support eligible voters to meet their legal obligation to be enrolled.
The Electoral Commission or any member of the Electoral Commission did not have contact with
Taieri MP Ingrid Leary regarding her attendance at any meeting or hui where Harry Tam and/or
Mongrel Mob members were in attendance.
Below is a copy of th
