Background information about Waikato
14.
Waikato is one of the biggest tertiary education provider’s in the Waikato Region and is also a
major contributor to the regional and national economy. Preliminary data suggests that
although Waikato has experienced a drop in EFTS, it will deliver over 100% of its 2016 SAC
funding allocation.

Appendix 1 – Biography of Neil Quigley
Professor Neil Quigley – Vice-Chancellor
Professor Quigley became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waikato in early 2015. Before
taking up his position as Vice-Chancellor, he was employed at Victoria University of Wellington for
19 years, originally as Professor of Economics, and more recently as Deputy Vice-Chancellor
(Research) and Provost. Prior to that, he was Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of
Western Ontario in Canada. Professor Quigley is a Director of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand
and also a Director of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). In 2013, he received an
honorary doctorate from the University of Economics in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
