Thank you for your email of 12 July 2023 to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment requesting,
under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), the fol owing:
“Can you please disclose the total number of EOI's have been received after 12 Oct 2022 that went into the
ballot of parent category visa which has it's first draw scheduled in August 2023. Only the application which
are currently in the ballot. Please include the number of persons.
Please share the process of conducting selection from ballot and how much time Immigration wil take to send
the Invitation to Apply from the date of selection.
Also, please share the parents category EOI's selection date from ballot every quarter until the end of
December 2024”
Our Response
The total number of Parent Resident Visa Category Expressions of Interest (EOI) in the bal ot received
between 12 October 2022 and 29 July 2023 (inclusive), is 5,144. The total number of applicants (people) this
represents is 7,862.
The bal ot selection is undertaken automatical y by Immigration New Zealand’s Application Management
System (AMS). Selection is random and not based on any factors apart from eligibility.
Fol owing selection, EOIs are al ocated to immigration officers, who undertake credibility checks to ensure
that clients are prima facie eligible prior to issuing an invitation to apply.
Given this wil be the first time we have run the bal ot draw, we do not have a confirmed processing
timeframe. However, we expect that each EOI credibility check should be completed quickly and anticipate
this to take two to three days. As a result, it may take two or three months to complete the credibility
checks of al those selected from the bal ot.
Selections will take place quarterly in February, May, August and November each year, and general y they
wil occur on the second Tuesday of the scheduled month. The first selection was on 8 August 2023.
