[FYI request #23490 email]
Tēnā koe Chantel e,
Thank you for your email of 14 July 2023 to the Minister of Corrections, Hon Kelvin Davis,
regarding remanded prisoners. As the Minister cannot intervene in operational matters,
your letter has been referred to the Department of Corrections – Ara Poutama Aotearoa for
response.
“…Could you please tel me the number of prisoners aged 25 and under who have
been remanded in custody at Auckland Prison (Paremoremo) and have been held in
maximum security whilst awaiting their trial or sentencing. Could you please supply
me with the numbers who have been remanded there over the past 12 months, and
how many are currently there on remand awaiting trial or sentencing and being held
in maximum security…”
Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA).
For ease of response, some of your questions have been re-ordered.
1. How many prisoners currently remanded at Auckland Prison are being held in
maximum security?
Please note that although a person may be held in a unit that is classed as a maximum-
security unit, this does not mean that the person is not managed as maximum security. A
person in prison is only assigned a security classification to a person who is subject to a term
of imprisonment exceeding three months. People who are held on remand are not assigned
a security classification.
The table below presents the number of unique people onsite in a maximum-security unit at
Auckland Prison as of 31 July 2023.
