Your Official Information Act request, reference: GOV-026555
Thank you for your request of 24 July 2023, asking for the following information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
I would like information on the number of balance bike injuries that occurred in young toddlers/kids
(under 5) along with the amount of hospital admissions as a result in the last 3 years dating back to
2018. Can you please also provide the type of physical injury that was caused by falling off the bike?
Information by year, sex, and severity of injury (head/cut/etc) if available would be appreciated.
The requested information is attached as Appendix 1
When interpreting the data provided, please refer to the ‘Notes’ tab.
We are unable to provide information on hospital admissions
Acute treatment in public hospitals for covered claims is provided by an annual service agreement between
ACC and the Ministry of Health and is funded by bulk payments from ACC to the Crown. These costs are not
attributed to individual claims. Finding the number of claims where a hospital admission was involved
would require us to manually review hundreds of individual claim files. This information is refused under
section 18(f) of the Act, due to substantial collation and research.
In making this decision, we have considered extending the timeframe, or charging, as allowed under the
Act. However, neither of these options have been offered as we have determined that providing this
information would unreasonably interfere with the everyday functions of the teams involved.
As this information may be of interest to other members of the public
ACC has decided to proactively release a copy of this response on ACC’s website. All requester data,
including your name and contact details, will be removed prior to release. The released response will be
made available
www.acc.co.nz/resources/#/category/12. If you are not happy with this response
you can contact the Ombudsman
via [email address] or by phoning 0800 802 602.
