Dear Mr West,
OFFICIAL INFORMATION ACT 1982 (OIA) – REQUEST FOR INFORMATION - CHRISTCHURCH
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT LIMITED (CIAL)
1.
We write further to our email of 14 August 2023, acknowledging receipt of your email of 11 August
2023 (via the third party public platform fyi.org.nz) in which you requested the following information
pursuant to the OIA:
“for meetings held where the Tarras Project was included - the dates, roles of participants and
meeting titles during 2023 with the following industry groups
1. Tourism New Zealand
2. Tourism Export Council NZ
3. Tourism Industry Aotearoa
4. Infrastructure NZ”
(the
Request).
2.
As you may be aware, the Central Otago airport project (the “
Project”) is a long-term project which
is currently in the validation and planning phase. To assist public understanding of the context of the
Project and CIAL’s decisions, CIAL has committed to, and does, proactively publish information as it
completes pieces of work which is likely to be in the public interest to receive on its dedicated Project
website at
https://www.centralotagoairport.co.nz/. Further information can also be found in relation
to CIAL’s approach to engagement in relation to the Project on this same website.
3.
As a significant infrastructure business, CIAL is regularly involved in working groups, partnerships,
industry bodies, public events and many other engagements. As part of this involvement CIAL may
meet or interact with representatives of industry groups where its interests intersect (including
tourism and infrastructure groups such as those noted in your request). It would require substantial
collation or research to determine which, if any, of those meetings included reference to, or
discussion of, the Project.
4.
In terms of meetings organised and held specifically in relation to the Project, CIAL has not held any
such meetings in 2023 with Infrastructure NZ, Tourism Export Council NZ or Tourism NZ. We note
that a CIAL representative met with the CEO of Tourism Industry Aotearoa on 20 July 2023 and the
Project was discussed as part of that meeting.
5.
We trust we have answered your request for information. If you require any further information or
we have in some way misinterpreted your Request, please let us know.
6.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of the decisions contained
in this letter. Information about how to contact the Ombudsman or make a complaint is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
Yours sincerely
CIAL LEGAL TEAM
