DELNA
DELNA is an in-house assessment designed to idenfy students who may need assistance with their academic English
language skil s. New UoA students complete the DELNA process at the beginning of their studies. DELNA is post-entry only.
The assessment results do not appear in students’ academic transcripts.
DELNA and Faculty Requirements
Some academic programmes/facules use DELNA to determine compleon of a non-credit English Language Competency
course, namely:
• EDUCSW 199, Faculty of Educaon and Social Work
• ENGGEN199, Faculty of Engineering
• Nursing 199, Pharmacy 199, and MEDIMAGE 199, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences
DELNA results are also used to determine whether
doctoral candidates will have addional language enrichment
milestones added to their list of
provisional year goals.
AELR and DELNA
DELNA results can somemes be used to sasfy the Academic English Language Requirement (AELR). However,
AELR and
DELNA are two separate processes. While the former is pre-admission, the later is post- admission only. The Admissions
Office determines whether students are yet to meet AELR and the pathways available for them to do so. New incoming
students complete DELNA regardless of AELR.
Most students who are yet to meet AELR wil sasfy the requirement upon successful compleon of an AELR course. A few
students are given the opon of using an acceptable DELNA result to meet AELR. An acceptable result in DELNA is a ‘Good’
or ‘Sasfactory’ result in the Screening assessment, or a minimum of 7 in the wring band and an overall average of 7 or
above in the Diagnosc assessment.
Compleng DELNA does not mean sasfying AELR. For students who can use DELNA to meet the requirement, this wil
depend on their results, as outlined above. When an acceptable result is not achieved, students must take and pass an
AELR course to meet the requirement.
The AELR process is managed by the Admissions Office, not by DELNA. The DELNA office has no say in the pathways
available for the requirement to be met. Students with AELR queries should be directed to th
e Student Hubs so that their
quesons can be passed on to the Admissions Office.
