I refer to your information request dated 24 September 2023 made under the Official Information Act
1982 (the Act). You have requested information in relation to entry to the 2020 – 2023 Bachelor of
Dental Surgery (BDS) programmes via the Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) General category.
Please see below our response to your request.
1. Minimum average academic mark to receive an offer from the waitlist into the BDS
programme commencing in 2020 – 2023 via the HSFY General category
We are awaiting clarification from our Admissions Office regarding the information you have
requested. As soon as this information has been clarified, we will provide a response to you with
regards to this part of your request.
2. The number of BDS applicants for entry to the programme in the years 2020 – 2023 via the
HSFY General category

3. The number of BDS applicants for the years 2020 – 2023 that passed the UCAT threshold in
each year via the HSFY General category
Subject to the following comments, please see the below table which shows the number of applicants
who met the UCAT thresholds and were invited to an interview for entry to the 2020 - 2023 BDS
programmes via the HSFY General category:
• To be considered for admission to the BDS programme via the HSFY category, an applicant
must have enrolled in the HSFY programme and passed all prescribed papers, at first attempt,
and have achieved a minimum average of 70%, with no paper grade less than 65%. Applicants
must have a score in all five of the UCAT sections at a threshold level determined annually by
the Dental Admissions Committee. Applicants must have also passed the HSFY Diagnostic Test
or have passed the ENGL128 paper. Further information on the entry requirements for the
BDS programme (including for all categories and sub-categories) is available on the University
website.
• Please note that the UCAT thresholds determined by the Dental Admissions Committee are
subject to change from year to year, any may not necessarily remain the same each year.
