I refer to your information request dated 10 October 2023 made under the Official Information Act
1982 (the Act). You have requested:
“the minimum academic score entries into MB ChB programme at the University of Otago, for
all 6 sub-category offers under HSFY entry pathway for each year between 2017-2023.”
Subject to the following comments, please see below the information you have requested:
•
Prior to 2019, admission processes were administered by the Health Sciences Admissions
Office rather than the current Student Administration team. Therefore, we cannot guarantee
the accuracy of the data provided for 2017 and 2018 due to differences in reporting methods.
•
NZRIPO stands for New Zealand Resident Indigenous Pacific Origins.
•
From 2017-2019, there were no applications that met the criteria for entry to the MB ChB
programme via the Refugee sub-category.
•
The MB ChB HSFY Socioeconomic sub-category has only existed since 2019.
•
On occasions where fewer than five students (“<5”) received offers for entry into the MB ChB
programme via a HSFY sub-category, we have determined that it is necessary to withhold the
scores for these students to protect their privacy and wellbeing. We consider that withholding
this information is necessary to protect against the identity of these students being
determined or inferred, and their personal information (i.e. their score) could be disclosed.
We therefore withhold this information pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act.

I trust that this information will be helpful. In the above cases, we consider that good reasons exist
for withholding information, and this is not outweighed by other considerations which would make
it desirable, in the public interest, to make the information available.
If you are not satisfied with our response to your information request, section 28(3) of the Act
provides you with the right to ask an Ombudsman to investigate and review this response. However,
we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.
