Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 7 November 2023, in 
which you requested: 
Please could you advise me as to what is happening with the empty police 
houses located in Julyan Street, Shannon.  
A Stuff article from January this year stated: 
“The divestment process of the property is currently paused to conclude a 
search for the previous owners (or successors) so the property can be 
offered back under the Public Works Act. This process should be concluded 
within the next two months.”. 
Has the process been concluded? What was the outcome? 
Currently the Julyan Street property is in the process of being offered back to the 
successors of the former owners, as required under section 40 of the Public Works Act 
1981. There has been some delay, but Police expect an offer can soon be made to the 
offerees. Once the offer has been signed by the Crown, the successors wil  have 40 
working days to accept the offer or not.  
If the offer is not accepted, the property wil  be advertised for potential Treaty settlement 
land banking through the Māori Protection Mechanism process (Treaty Settlements 
Landbank and the Māori Protection Mechanism | Toitū Te Whenua - Land Information 
New Zealand (linz.govt.nz). The timeframe from submission of the property to Te 
Arawhiti, to the date the property is land banked, or released for sale could be around 12 
months. If the property is not land banked for future Treaty settlement purposes, it wil  be 
advertised for sale on the open market.
