Official Information Act 1982 request: Race Relations Commissioner
Thank you for your email of 21 November 2023 to the Ministry of Justice (the Ministry)
requesting information under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act). Specifically, you
requested:
I noted, https://www.justice.govt.nz/about/statutory-vacancies/
Applications close at 4.00 pm Friday 3 November 2023. Race Relations Commissioner
May I ask how you called for public nomination and on what platform you have call for
public nominations mostly recently, e.g. govt.jobs website. Also, how many
applications you have received from the public and how many you have received from
other nominating agencies such as TPK or Ministry of women etc. Also, can you
please supply the term of appointment and its pay rate.
In response to your request, I can advise, the expressions of interest were sought via a
posting on the Ministry website. In addition, about 100 community organisations and
individuals were emailed and asked to encourage suitable candidates to put themselves
forward. The recipients of the email were mostly identified from the contact list for the
Ministry’s international human rights reporting. Ten applications have been received, all from
individuals responding to the call for expressions of interest.
Under the Crown Entities Act 2004, this appointment can be made for a term of up to five
years. The remuneration for the position is set by the Remuneration Authority and is
individualised at the time of each new appointment. I can, however, advise that recent
determinations for Human Rights Commissioners have been about $250,000 a year.
If you require any further information, please contact Media & Social Media Manager Joe
Locke at [email address].
Please note that this response, with your personal details removed, may be published on the
Ministry website at: justice.govt.nz/about/official-information-act-requests/oia-responses/.
If you are not satisfied with this response, you have the right to make a complaint to the
Ombudsman under section 28(3) of the Act. The Ombudsman may be contacted by phone
on 0800 802 602 or by email to [email address]
