Request under the Official Information Act 1982 – Privacy and Turnitin
Thank you for your email of 1 December 2023, requesting the fol owing information from Te Pūkenga
– New Zealand Institute of Skil s and Technology (Te Pūkenga):
Can I please have any documents related to privacy and the use of turn it in. Including the
analysis done to make sure it complies with nz privacy laws.
This letter provides a formal decision on your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA).
The decision
Many business divisions of Te Pūkenga use Turnitin to ensure academic integrity. We are not aware
of any specific analysis carried out on Turnitin and its use within Te Pūkenga in relation to New
Zealand’s privacy laws and, during our research for your request, we have not located any analysis
that may have been done by divisions of Te Pūkenga when they were independent entities and
commenced use of Turnitin.
However, we can direct you to the fol owing resources:

Taking the points above into consideration, we have decided to refuse your request with reliance on
sections 18(d) and 18(e) of the OIA:
- some of the information requested is publicly available (as per weblinks provided above)
- the document al eged to contain the information requested (regarding any analysis done)
does not exist or, despite reasonable efforts to locate it, cannot be found.
You have the right to make a complaint to the Ombudsman under section 28(3) of the OIA if you are
