I refer to your email, which we received on 4 July 2011, requesting the following information: 
 
a)  
how many people were employed by the six TLA's that became Auckland Council? 
b)  
the total wage bill for these people? 
c)  
how many people are employed by the current Auckland Council? 
d) 
the total wage bill for these people? 
 
Auckland Council does not hold information on employee numbers and wage bills pre-dating 1 
November 2011 as all the predecessor organisations were on different HR and payroll systems. 
 
The best source of this information is the Auckland Transition Agency press release dated 28 
September 2010 that stated that the total number of employees in the old structures (eight councils, 
their council-controlled organisations (CCOs) and related entities) would reduce from 9,430 full time 
equivalent employees on 1 November 2009 to 8,207 by 1 November 2010. The total wage bill would 
fall from $640.0 million per annum (at 1 November 2009) to $537.5m at 1 November 2010. 
 
Auckland Council (excluding the CCOs) had 5,163 employees at 30 June 2011. The total annualised 
wage bill (based on the April to June 2011 period) was $325.7 million.
