Thank you for your email of 12 December 2023 requesting information relating to 
Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures (SFF Futures) funding. Your request has been 
considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA). 
 
You requested the following:  
'With a budget of approximately $40 million a year, the Sustainable Food and Fibre 
Futures (SFF Futures) fund supports problem solving and innovation.'  
Funding can be allocated to 'partnerships' and 'grants'.  
Please can I have a list of approved and rejected partnerships and grants proposals 
from 2019-current. Included in this list is the funding amount proposed for and the 
institution/organisation or project lead making the proposal. 
 
SFF Futures projects that have been funded are published at 
https://www.mpi.govt.nz/funding-rural-support/sustainable-food-fibre-futures/sustainable-
food-and-fibre-futures-projects/. This information includes the amount of funding given and 
the project partners. This part of your request is therefore refused under section 18(d) of the 
OIA – that the information requested is publicly available. 
 
The details relating to rejected partnerships and grant proposals are withheld under section 
9(2)(b)(ii) of the OIA – to protect information where the making available of the information 
would be likely unreasonably to prejudice the commercial position of the person who is the 
subject of the information. 
 
MPI is satisfied that in the circumstances of this case, the withholding of the information is 
not outweighed by other considerations which render it desirable in the public interest to 
make the information available.
