Official Information Act request: Race Relations Commissioner
Thank you for your email of 20 December 2024, to the Ministry of Justice (the Ministry),
requesting, under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act), information about the selection
of the Race Relations Commissioner. Referencing a previous response to you (our ref: OIA
108246), you requested:
I noted [you said]: In response to your request, I can advise, the expressions of
interest were sought via a posting on the Ministry website. In addition, about 100
community organisations and individuals were emailed and asked to encourage
suitable candidates to put themselves forward. The recipients of the email were
mostly identified from the contact list for the Ministry’s international human rights
reporting. Ten applications have been received, all from individuals responding to the
call for expressions of interest.
Please provide the name of that 100 community organizations and individuals if
allows. Also, you have mentioned about a contact list for the Ministry’s international
human rights reporting, can you please provide the contact list in full if possible. Also,
a background information about how you came up with that contact list and how can
people get on to this list.
In response to your request, please find attached a list in appendix 1 of the organisations
that were contacted. As noted in a previous response to you, this is a contact list for the
Ministry’s international human rights reporting. The names of four individuals have been
withheld under section 9(2)(a) of the Act, to protect the privacy of natural persons. In this
latter regard, I do not consider that the reason for withholding the information is outweighed
by the public interest in this matter.
You also asked how the list was compiled and how you might have your name added to it.
Al the groups or individuals are on the list because they have asked to be. If you wish to
confirm your interest in being added to the list, you can email your request to:
[email address].
If you require any further information, please contact Media & Social Media Manager Joe
Locke at [email address].
Please note that this response, with your personal details removed, may be published on the
Ministry website at: justice.govt.nz/about/official-information-act-requests/oia-responses/.
If you are not satisfied with this response, you have the right to make a complaint to the
Ombudsman under section 28(3) of the Act. The Office of the Ombudsman may be
contacted by email to [email address] or by phone on 0800 802 602.
Nāku noa, nā
