Official Information Act request 23.146 Second year law grade information
I refer to the Official Information Act (the Act) request dated 20 December 2023 for information relating to law
student grade information. You have specifical y requested:

I would like to request the final grade/s obtained by each of the persons accepted into second year
law in the years 2020-2023 (including for those starting second year law in 2024).
On 29 January 2024, I wrote the fol owing to you regarding narrowing the scope of your request:
We are currently working on your OIA request. During this process, it has become apparent that the request is
very broad, given the number of students involved. There are also identifiability concerns regarding providing
the grades for each course for these students, given that some students could pick a unique combination of
courses. As it stands, we are likely to refuse the request under OIA s(18)(f), as the information requested cannot
be made available without substantial col ation and research. As a way forward, would your request be
satisfied by providing more general information – for example, how many students were accepted into second
year law for 2020- 2023, how many students applied for second year law in 2020- 2023?
As of 14 February 2024, we have not had a response to this request to narrow the scope of your request.
Therefore, your request is refused under s 18(f) of the Act, as the information could not be provided without
substantial col ation. The information is also withheld under s 9(2)(a) of the Act, to protect the privacy of the
individuals. It is in the public interest that individuals are not identifiable when providing information under
the Act.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about
