Thank you for your request of 22 December 2023 asking for information relating to how
Fire and Emergency New Zealand determines colour schemes for our appliances. Your request has
been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) and please find our response to
each aspect of your request below:
1. How does Fire and Emergency determine its vehicle colours given that some urban and
rural stations have both yel ow and red appliances?
Currently, new appliances that are predominantly designed to provide off-road firefighting
capability are painted yellow and the rest are painted red.
2. If there are any documents on Vehicle livery design can these be released?
Please find attached, as
Appendix 1 to this response, versions 3.0 and 4.1 of the Fire and
Emergency Brand Guidelines for vehicle livery. Please note that the latter document is incomplete.
3. Since Fire and Emergency NZ was formed as a unified national organisation why have Two
colour standards been retained…
Both yellow and red are part of Fire and Emergency’s brand. Before Fire and Emergency was
created most rural appliances were yellow, and to date we have not had any compelling reason to
standardise on a single colour.
4. what requirements are needed for a truck to be yel ow vs red when newly built?
See answer to question 1.
5.
Does Fire and Emergency intend to continue both colour schemes long-term?
There are no plans to change the current colour schemes.
