Thank you for your request of 21 January 2024, to Fire and Emergency New Zealand asking for
information relating to our attendance to medical callouts for the period 2014 to 2018. This was a
follow-up request to a response we provided you on 22 December 2023, where you were requiring
similar information but for a different time period. In this recent request, you have asked:
1. Please can you let us know the number of medical emergencies you have attended per
month from 2014 to 2018 inclusive?
2. What percentage of Fire and Emergency call-outs are for medical emergencies per month
for 2014 to 2018?
3. Please can you break down the emergency medical call-outs you have attended by
ambulance priority code for 2014 to 2018.
4. How many of these medical emergencies ended sadly in death for 2014 to 2018?
5. Please can you cite the numbers of medical emergency call-outs per week for 2014 to 2018.
6. Please can you provide the information on how the medical emergencies that Fire and
Emergency NZ attended from 2014 to 2018 clustered per day of the week?
7. Do Fire and Emergency staff do CPR often and is this in your training? Do you have
information on how often Fire and Emergency staff have to do CPR on call-outs?
Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA). Please find
attached the data you have requested.
You also requested information on staff CRP training. How to administer CPR is included in our
medical training for firefighters. The medical training is at a high standard and certified at industry
level. There are regular refresher training days to ensure our emergency patient care is consistent
and up to date.
You have also asked how often Fire and Emergency staff undertake CPR on callouts. Our career
and volunteer firefighters engage in CPR on a regular basis assisting our ambulance partners at a
co-responder or first responder level to create better health outcomes for the patients we attend
to and treat. However, we do not record when firefighters conduct CPR at an incident, so we are
unable to provide that data. Therefore, this aspect of your request is refused under section 18(e)
of the OIA, as the document al eged to contain the information requested does not exist.
You have the right, by way of complaint under section 28(3) of the OIA, to request an investigation
and review of Fire and Emergency’s decision to refuse information by the Ombudsman.
Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or
freephone 0800 802 602.
I trust that the information being provided is of assistance. If you require further information,
please email [FENZ request email]
