some of inter-divisional uniqueness of the BAppSc. The BAppSc was original y a four year degree that
changed to a standard three year degree sometime ago. There has been widespread confusion about the
BAppSc regulations by both students and staff. Many major subjects have low or decreasing enrolments.
The Division of Sciences wishes to simplify and reduce the number of qualifications and offerings that it
makes. These justifications are explored elsewhere in this proposal.
Consultation with Students
(Consultation with students should be undertaken in paral el with consultation with other academic units, other Divisions, and
support areas prior to submission of this proposal to your Divisional Board. The consultation shal include contacting the OUSA
Academic Representative ([email address]) or OUSA Postgraduate Students’ Representative ([email address]), who
wil contact relevant academic student associations and/or a relevant sample of students. Academic staff are encouraged to consult
more widely than OUSA. Unless a student is acting in an official role (e.g. OUSA Academic Representative), students’ names should
be redacted in the consultation table and elsewhere throughout the proposal.)

Transitional Arrangements
(Are there any transitional arrangements necessary as a result of this deletion? If necessary, special arrangements must be
specified for students who are part-way through programmes who would otherwise be disadvantaged. Information in this section

ensuring that affected students are informed about changes and transitional arrangements.)
Al existing students are permitted to complete their chosen degree.
Students, subject to meeting the regulations can opt to transfer to one of the other qualifications if their
major is continuing.
Course advice and support wil be important to ensure students are making an informed decision.
If this proposal is approved a communication wil be sent from the PVC Sciences to al existing BAppSc
students. This wil include information regarding the transitional arrangements, options available,
contact details for students seeking advice and other support that might be required.

BAppSc and BAppSc (Hons) into the BSc
The Applied Sciences Academic Advisory Group and Division of Sciences Academic Board have endorsed a
proposal to investigate the potential discontinuation of both the BAppSc and BAppSc (Hons) and fold these into
the BSc. Guiding my thinking is:
1. Originally launched as a four-year interdisciplinary degree in 2001 it changed to a three-year degree in
2011 with the addition of a compulsory minor. Some of the underlying motivation has been taken up by
the conjoint BASc and BComSc
2. It is not well understood by potential students as highlighted in recent Sciences market research
3. It creates complexity of offering and pathway, and I believe we underestimate the cost of this complexity
4. It creates confusion when we have majors that are not well-differentiated from majors in the BSc
As a counterpoint, a number of people have spoken about the benefits associated with minors from Commerce
that the BAppSc brings in regard to the common core.
A fact (neither for or against) is that many of the majors have small numbers of enrolments (see attached
Completion headcounts for selected BAppSC Majors 2017-2022 document) although there are several that have
a relatively healthy number who have graduated with a BAppSc.
I see the value in potentially retaining Software Engineering but rebranding as part of a Bachelor of Engineering
which we are investigating at the moment.
If following consultation, the decision is made to proceed with the discontinuation of the BAppSc and BAppSc
(Hons), the Specialist, Academic Committees & Services (Mark Wilesmith) will provide an outline of steps and
timing which would include the CUAP process and identifying any support required.
