MetService have issued a RED WARNING HEAVY RAIN in parts of Westland and Buller. Heavy rain is now falling and we expect dangerous river conditions and significant flooding. Slips and floodwaters are likely to disrupt travel, making some roads impassable and possibly isolating communities.

Expect 350 to 400mm of rain about the ranges, and 150 to 200mm about the coast. Peak rates of 20 to 30mm per hour expected during Friday and Saturday, especially in possible thunderstorms.

• Those in low-lying areas should prepare to evacuate and have a grab bag ready to go.

• As a precaution, we recommend staying with family and friends on higher ground.

• Move pets to a safe place and move stock to higher ground. If you have to leave, take your pets with you. If it’s not safe for you, it’s not safe them.

• Move livestock to paddocks that allow them to move away from floodwaters, are not at risk from landslides and are not close to power lines.

• Listen to emergency services and follow any instructions regarding evacuation of your area.

• Stay informed by listening to local radio or by following West Coast Emergency Management online.

Check www.metservice.com for the latest on weather and www.nzta.govt.nz for highway information.

Remember, during severe weather:

<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Stay away from floodwater. Floods and flash floods can happen quickly. If you see rising water do not wait for official warnings. Head for higher ground and stay away from floodwater.

<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Drive only if absolutely necessary and avoid flooded roads and washed-out bridges.

<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>If water enters your home, turn off the electricity to avoid short-circuits sparking a fire.

<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Bring inside or tie down any loose items outdoors.

<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Move livestock to paddocks that allow them to move away from floodwaters, are not at risk from landslides and are not close to power lines.

<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>Check on your neighbours and help anyone who might need assistance.

<![if !supportLists]>·         <![endif]>If life, health or property is in danger, call 111.
