Re: Waikōwhai Boardwalk Repair
Thank you for your email dated 25 February 2024, in which you requested information about
the Waikōwhai Boardwalk. The specific details of your request and our response are below.
The Waikōwhai Boardwalk (Onehunga Bay to Waikowhai) is currently closed following
the cyclone last year. I am requesting:
1. 1: What assessment work of the boardwalk has been carried out since it was
shut?
Waikōwhai Boardwalk sustained significant damage following the storms in early 2023 and
from subsequent slips and trees onto sections of the path. Evidence of this is captured in the
attached photos (the aerial photo was taken soon after the initial storm at the end of January
2023).
Due to the amount of damage the tracks and walkways sustained along the Manukau
Foreshore and continual bad weather throughout 2023, access to these tracks has been
restricted due to the health and safety risk to staff and contractors’ until the area was more
stable.
Our external consultants have completed an assessment and schedule of works. The Parks
and Community Facilities department are now waiting to confirm priorities with the local board
prior to proceeding.
(A council assessment was undertaken (attached), however this was completed prior to
another slip which dislodged some of the boardwalk (which is shown in one of the photos)).
Slip assessments have been also completed for the private properties above the boardwalk.

2. What work has been completed so far in relation to repairing the walkway?
No physical works have been completed in relation to repairing the walkway, however some
arborist (tree removal) work has been undertaken.
3. What is the expected time to completion of repairs to the walkway?
There is currently no timeframe for any works to be completed as the whole coastal walkway
wil be reviewed and prioritised in relation to the scale of damage and repair.
Staff wil workshop with the local board in 2024 the suggested priorities and timeframes for
undertaking the work, following which we wil then be able to confirm what work wil be
undertaken and when.
We anticipate that there wil be some walkways that require minimal work to reopen while
others wil require more substantial work, such as the Waikōwhai Boardwalk.
