Tēnā koe Mike
Thank you for your request of 19 March 2024, to Fire and Emergency New Zealand requesting
information relating to the remaining MAN Type 3 builds. Your request has been considered under
the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) and our response to each of your questions is below.
For context, Fire and Emergency maintains one of the largest fleets of commercial vehicles in
New Zealand, with more than 1,280 fire trucks and specialist response vehicles. We have an
ongoing new appliance replacement programme which involves the purchase of new trucks and
disposal of older trucks. This includes procurement projects underway for new Type 3 appliances
that are the predominant type used by career firefighters.
1. Does Fire and Emergency stil have existing MAN type 3 Cab/chassis that are yet to have
bodies built and fitted and be placed on front-line response?
Yes, Fire and Emergency has MAN Type 3 cab/chassis that are yet to have bodies built and fitted
on front-line response appliances.
2. If so what is their progress given FENZs aging type 3 fleet?
We have a contract with a supplier to build 28 Type 3 appliances using these cab chassis, and 14
are currently in transit to the supplier.
3. How many of these trucks are to be built?
There are 28 fire appliances to be built. Two other appliances have been built but are not yet
deployed into operational service.
4. What has caused the delay?
The delay was caused by the time required to select the supplier.
5. Wil these be built and deployed before or at the same time as the UK-built New
Generation type 3 appliances that are currently in trial are rol ed out as type 3s.
The 28 fire appliances are expected to be built and deployed before production versions of the UK-
built New Generation Type 3 appliances currently in trial are deployed into operational service.
6. Wil the bodies be built in NZ by an NZ manufacturer?
The bodies will not be built in New Zealand by a New Zealand manufacturer.
7. Have FENZ provided the NZ Defence Force MAN type 3 appliances also?
Fire and Emergency has not provided the New Zealand Defence Force MAN Type 3 appliances.
However, we have supplied 6 MAN cab chassis to the Ministry of Defence.
We trust that the information being provided is of assistance. If you require further information,
please email [FENZ request email].
Nāku noa, nā
