I refer to your information request dated 30 March 2024 made under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act). You have requested the following information in relation to the University of Otago’s
Bachelor of Dentistry (BDS) programme:
“The maximum number of students allowed to attend the Auckland institution in their 5th
year. Could you please provide information on the selection process and the number of
students recruited for admission to Auckland so far?”
Subject to the following general comment, please see below our response to your request.
• Facilities for the teaching of the final year of the BDS programme are provided at the Faculty
of Dentistry in Dunedin and in the Auckland Dental Facility. After completion of the fourth
year, the class is divided and students are allocated to either Dunedin or Auckland for the final
year.
1. Maximum Available Places at the Auckland School of Dentistry
The maximum number of places for fifth year BDS or BDS(Hons) students to complete their studies at
the University of Otago Auckland Dental Facility is 40.
2. Selection Process
In dividing the class between Auckland and Dunedin, account is taken of each student’s personal
preference as far as possible. If the numbers of applicants for entry to either teaching centre exceeds
the number of places available, a ballot is held to determine which students will be required to take a
place in each centre. The division includes international students who are also allocated between the
two centres. Once class division has been finalised, exchanges between centres will be permitted only
if there is a vacant place and with the approval of the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry.
Please note that as fifth year BDS or BDS(Hons) students are already enrolled at the University Otago,
there is no “recruitment for admission” involved in the allocation process.
3. Number of Students by Campus
Subject to the following comment, please see the following table which shows the number of fifth
year BDS and BDS(Hons) students by facility for the years 2019-2023:
• We note that the Auckland Dental Facility opened in 2021. Prior to 2021, all fifth year BDS and
BDS(Hons) students completed the fifth and final year of their studies in Dunedin.
