OIA 24238
James Kent
[FYI request #26272 email]
Dear James
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 31 March 2024 in which
you asked:
As you may know, over the course of the past few years, incidents of assault and
abuse against frontline employees have skyrocketed. Police, Parking Wardens,
Council Employees, EMS Staff, have been victim to ever-increasing instances of
abuse.
Do you have any information to whether or not you will be proposing legislation (be it
by yourself, or in co-operation with others) to reduce the number of unacceptable
assaults against frontline staff by significantly increasing penalties for such actions?
Supposedly, one was put forward years ago, only to be voted down.
I have interpreted your request as advice I have received relating to reducing the number of
assaults against frontline staff.
No information has been identified as within scope of your request and as such, your request
is refused in full under section 18(e) of the OIA, as the information requested does not exist.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision if you are not satisfied with
my response to your request.
Yours sincerely
Hon Mark Mitchell
Minister of Police
