Thank you for your request of 4 April 2024 to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment
(MBIE) requesting, under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), the following information:
Please advise me whether all unpaid debts relating to people required to stay in MIQ facilities
during 2021 have now been written off, or if collection efforts remain under way.
If collection efforts remain under way, please provide a list of all unpaid MIQ debts that have not
been written off and remain subject to collection action, showing in each case invoice number,
invoice date and amount of debt. (I am not asking for any personal information relating to the
debtors.)
As at 31 December 2023 $181,053,054 has been paid of the $200,753,576 MIQ fees owed, leaving
$19.7m outstanding in MIQ fees invoices. Collection of this debt is continuing.
Your request for invoice details is declined under section 9(2)(a) of the Act, in order to protect the
privacy of natural persons. I do not consider that the withholding of this information is outweighed by
other considerations which render it desirable, in the public interest, to make that information
available.
You have the right, under section 28(3) of the Act, to ask the Ombudsman to review any decisions made
under this request.
Ngā mihi nui,
Nerissa Smith
Head of the Office of the Deputy Secretary
Labour, Science and Enterprise, MBIE
