I refer to your information request dated 12 April 2024 made under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act). You have requested:
“I am writing to enquire about your use of digital artificial avian noises throughout the
Dunedin Campus. Ones of note include outside the Burns Building and outside Hayward
College.
There seems to be a constant repetitive cycle of avian noises that sound tinny, which leads me
to believe that they may be originating from a speaker. Furthermore, they are consistent no
matter the time of day or season, which does not coincide with my ecological knowledge of
birdsong.
In summary, I would like to know whether there is use of artificial avian noise emanating from
speakers around campus, the reason for unbeknownst to me. Clarification of this reason if this
is the case would be greatly appreciated.”
Please see below our response to your request.
The University does not use digital artificial avian noises on campus. Consequently, we are unable to
provide you with clarification of the reason(s) for using artificial avian noises, and therefore decline
providing any further information pursuant to section 18(g) of the Act, as the information is not held
by the University.
I trust that this information will be helpful.
If you are not satisfied with our response to your information request, section 28(3) of the Act
provides you with the right to ask an Ombudsman to investigate and review this response. However,
we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.
