Tēnā koe Valerie
Thank you for your email of 7 May 2024 to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE)
requesting, under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), the following information:
In 2023, MBIE co-funded two feasibility studies with Air New Zealand into waste-to-energy
technology for so-called sustainable aviation fuel: Fulcrum BioEnergy, in partnership with Air BP,
was to deliver one study. LanzaTech and LanzaJet, in partnership with Z Energy, was to deliver the
other study.
Newsroom reported that the new government has cancelled involvement in these studies. Would
you please advise the current status of these studies?
As at 15 May 2024, the government has not cancelled involvement in the two feasibility studies into the
domestic production of sustainable aviation fuels. Government officials are continuing engagement with
Air New Zealand, Lanzajet and Fulcrum Bioenergy to ensure delivery of the studies this year. The studies
support the Government’s coalition agreement commitments to plan for transitional low-carbon fuels to
achieve sovereign fuel resilience.
